Last week was #NationalRoastDay, where people everywhere in the Twitterverse were encouraged to post jokes at the expense of others and have fun while doing it. But absolutely no one did it better than Wendy’s!
Every year, Twitter gets amped up with their hypothetical bags of popcorn to watch the show of Wendy’s destroying pretty much everyone on Twitter. Many have tried, but basically everyone has failed to best Wendy’s in the battle of witty words. How it works is random users and even celebrities and other companies will tweet at Wendy’s, asking them to roast a picture of them or just roast them in general. A roast is basically making fun of someone or something without holding back, and Wendy’s delivered that delicious savagery all day long.
The fun thing about this campaign, is that Wendy’s was getting free advertising without spending an outrageous amount of money. Wendy’s was trending on Twitter, and people around the world logging into to the app could see who they were and what they were saying. If they didn’t know what Wendy’s was, they could simply click on their page and within seconds realize it was a fast food restaurant.
The beauty of this simple campaign is it’s effectiveness. Wendy’s was providing an experience, which in turn will ultimately help them sell more burgers because it spiked an interest and awareness in their business. You don’t have to be a national company to give this a try though! What are people in your area interested in? Does your town have an inside joke or something that makes you special? Do you have a competitor that you can have a friendly competition with online, (for example, who’s employees have cuter pets?). Brainstorm and give it a shot!
