Have you watched the Fyre Festival documentaries on Netflix and Hulu? Both are accurate descriptions of the complete dumpster fire of an event that started out well enough but soon crumpled into a total disaster, due to poor planning and execution. It’s tragic how an event so well promoted and marketed ended so horribly, but with the details of possible scams behind the scenes it’s easy to see why.
The beauty of the viral marketing behind the festival was the use of social media influencers. According to this article in Forbes, influencer marketing is different from celebrity endorsements, because of the direct and more personal contact that a brand can have with it’s audience through the trustworthy relationship the influencer has with the brand’s audience. It can be a big investment with a hefty price tag, but can pay off very well if done correctly.
The key is to find influencers who are popular with your audience demographics. A large following is not always necessary, as long as they are actually influential, meaning they have that relationship of trust with your audience already. Picking a platform is important too, because if all of your customers are on Facebook, it wouldn’t help to choose someone who uses Twitter or Instagram more frequently.
