One of the great mysteries of marketing is how society determines what is hot and trending at the moment. Twitter has a live feed of hashtags that trend every day, and it changes constantly, depending on what its users are interested in at any given time. Having a feel for your audience and the way they respond to your marketing material is key to staying relevant and more relatable than your competition.

For instance, recently there was a large company that posted a Facebook post to advertise its delivery services. The image they used had two attractive young men, one delivering the groceries and the other reaching out to grab them with a huge smile on his face. The comment section went wild with people imagining all sorts of different interpretations of the image, most people concocting stories where the men were long-lost friends, lovers, etc. The consensus was that everyone wanted more, but the company never followed up or responded to any of the comments that were not questions about delivery service.

This was a missed opportunity to reach a large audience of people. A spin off from the original ad could have been used as launching pad for a larger marketing campaign, especially with people who were already interested and asking for more. Although a story about two dudes at a door had absolutely nothing to do with delivery services, a clever campaign would be able to work with that, building custom ads that would gather a lot of attention and traffic to both the website and the store.
