According to the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, Instagram is no longer a photo sharing app.

The platform will be focusing primarily on Creators, Video, Shopping and Messaging moving forward.

Mosseri later clarified his tweet by saying that Instagram will not be abandoning photos, photo creators or artists, but that they are simply looking at new ways of entertaining people.

It’s a smart move, especially considering how high the competition is between TikTok and Instagram. Ever since TikTok’s popularity grew in 2020, Instagram has been fighting to keep users on their platform by introducing new ways of creating content: aka Reels. Instagram even recently announced that they will be compensating creators for their high-performing content in a new in-app feature called Bonuses, which is similar to TikTok’s Creator Fund. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the company wants to reward creators for creating great content.

While this is great news for influencers and creators, what does all of this mean for businesses?

It means you have to get competitive if you really want great results on Instagram.

Getting competitive means,

  • Making more video content (both IGTV and Reels videos)
  • Engaging with accounts that would like your page and your business
  • Posting at optimal times
  • Creating a store on Instagram where users can shop for your products
  • Interacting with other Reels and spending time on the Reels explore page
  • Posting to Stories
  • Going Live on Instagram
  • Still posting static posts to keep a variety on your page

Sounds like a lot of work right?

It IS a lot of work to keep your account active, relevant and growing on Instagram, but it’s important to change along with the platform if you want to keep getting good results from your page.

Remember, the key is keeping people engaged. So whether that means posting something eye-catching, posting a fun or entertaining video, sharing more about your business and your journey, or just writing a really good caption, there are many ways to capture the attention of your audience members and keep them looking at your posts.
